Every beginning is difficult and that is why our article is here to help you today with mastering your first few games in Valve’s new game Deadlock. We will talk you through the meaning of Souls, what Spirit is, where you can find the most used and presumably best builds for each hero and what a potential balanced Hero-Squad could look like if you 6-stacked with your friends. Welcome to our Deadlock beginners guide!
Souls are the game’s ingame currency that can be obtained through various actions such as farming minions, killing opponents, small pve fights, slot machines, little wooden boxes, the mid boss and small buddha statues.
In addition to that, souls also act as XP. After earning 3000 Souls you unlock your ultimate ability and by defeating guardians and walkers or leveling up with the XP earned by Souls you can upgrade your abilities.
In addition to the said example above there is one more very useful task that can be done during the game and that said thing is collecting and dropping off an urn. The Soul Urn spawns 10 minutes into the match at the outside of the purple and yellow lanes and needs to be carried to the opposite Soul Urrn spawn that gives souls to your team and an additional 25% bonus for the carrier + an ability point. A nice way to get yourself some extra Souls.
You might have already realized that there is always a little green or red ball flying above a defeated opponent or your own minions for example and even after a done task. That is because after defeating a npc, opponent or dropping of the Urn or etc., Souls fly up and can still be snatched away by your enemies nearby. Make sure to always shoot the Soul balls especially in the beginning of a game since that is where you need to farm as many Souls as fast as possible. Make sure to also always try to snatch away as many Souls as you can in the first stages of the game.
While obtaining Souls there is one more task to be done, securing those souls. While laning and killing lane creeps, you will receive half of the souls reward and the other half is flying in the air. You are supposed to shoot them to secure them and earn the other half, if nothing happens those souls will burst and you will receive the other half, but if an enemy shoots them he will get that half.
You should take advantage of this mechanic and steal your enemies souls. When you are killing creep camps or gaining souls from boxes or slot machines, you will accumulate unsecured souls which can be seen in bottom left next to your regular souls. Those unsecured souls will turn into regular souls over time, they can be used to buy items from shops together with the regular souls at any time. If you end up dying all the unsecured souls that you are carrying will be stolen by your enemies.
Souls can and must be used at your spawns shop or at various shop locations around the map, circled in red in the following picture, in order to buy upgrades for your character. At the beginning when you roll out to your lane, there is a shop next to your guardian as long as it has not been defeated. As soon as it is defeated the shop closes.
Every character has the same possible items to choose from in the 3 categories Weapon, Vitality and Spirit. The item prices are also divided in 4 categories: 500 Souls, 1.250 Souls, 3.000 Souls, 6.300 Souls.
If you are a more advanced player you can make your own build for each Hero, with what you think suits your character and play style best. As this is a beginners guide, where we tell you everything you need to know about Builds as a starter, we will not focus on figuring out how to make a Build and rather show you how to find the most popular Builds for each Hero.
When pressing “B” as the standard bind, your Hero’s menu will open and in addition to the 3 shop categories you also have a “Builds” tab. Here you navigate to the top right in order to browse and then on the left side click “Public” and the little refresh icon. This will show you the most saved builds for your character and should help you a lot getting started in the first place.
You will also find the best builds for each hero if you got to deadlocknews.org/heroes/ and scroll down to the "Best Build" part of each hero.
Next for our Deadlock beginners guide we are talking about Spirit. Spirit is a form of Damage, mostly dealt by your abilities, therefore leveling spirit damage will increase the damage you deal with your ultimate or other abilities. While bullets deal physical weapon damage, spirit deals ability damage.
Some hero stats and abilities scale with the obtained Spirit Power, seen as a purple star with an up arrow and for an exact overview of your Spirit Power you can hold the ALT key in-game.
Deadlock is a fun game to be played together with friends especially since it is so versatile and connects the CS2, Dota2, Overwatch and League of Legends communities all together.
When picking your Heroes we suggest having a balanced approach to the game, especially in your first few games it's great to try out Close-, Mid- and Longrange Heroes, so that you figure out what suits you best. After that when 6-stacking it is recommended to have two rather tanky characters where one should be focusing on healing and the other one serving as a tank, one or two aggressive close range like Infernus or attack heroes like Vindicta and then two balanced ones. The Author's recommendation for a great balanced Hero is Ivy. Serves as a healer with its bullet lifesteal ability and supports teammates in various situations + also deals great weapon damage when leveled.
We hope you enjoyed our Deadlock beginners guide and that we provided you with some valuable information that will make your start into the game a lot easier.
